What is pancaking?

“Pancaking” is when your stool comes out of the stoma but sits around the top and it doesn’t fall into the bag. If you are experiencing pancaking with the use of a support belt, firstly adjust your belt and make sure that it is not too tight and then also watch your diet – make sure that you are not consuming too many starches or carbs like bread, pasta, rice, potato and banana and check if you are consuming enough water throughout the day to help the stool slide. As a next step, addition of lubrication such as vegetable oil or baby oil to the back of your pouch before putting it on is suggested. It is recommended that you then see your stomal therapy nurse because you could need an adjustment to your product or to your support garment.
