Abdominal exercises for stoma management: Mobility and stability (Video 3 of 3)

Continuing with the series of abdominal exercises that are safe and gentle for your stomal area…This can be done on your bed if this is easier for you to access. We have done pelvic tilt and core activation in videos 1 & 2, if you haven’t watched those please go back to them to understand the correct way to achieve a neutral spine…this video looks at mobility and stability in the lateral planes of the abdomen, moving side to side…

  • Lie on your back on a comfortable surface, knees bent, feet together and flat on the floor. Breathe normally.
  • Find your neutral spine position
  • Keeping knees together gently roll the knees to one side (your lower back may lift a little) and then gently back to the centre before rolling them to the other side
  • It is normal to feel a stretch in the top outer thigh area or your bottom so only move in a comfortable range for you. Not everyone will be as flexible as each other, so take it gently. Build up to 20 on each side as tolerated.

If you have any questions on this exercise please contact your local physiotherapist, accredited exercise physiologist or stomal therapy nurse before performing.
