Can I travel safely with a stoma?
Yes! Having a stoma shouldn’t stop you from travelling, whether you are taking a short road trip, a domestic flight, or a long-haul trip. The key to stress-free trip is preparation. Packing the right supplies, planning, and understanding your travel environment can help you enjoy your holiday with confidence.
How many Stoma supplies should I take when travelling?
While this is not an exact science, a good rule of thumb is to pack at least twice the number of stoma supplies you would normally use during your trip.
Changes in climate, diet, activity levels, and routine can impact the frequency, timing, and consistency of your stoma output, and hot humid environments or the activities you are doing may also mean your stoma pouch or ostomy appliance needs change as well.
If you are already at your monthly limit of supplies your STN can provide an authority to order more stoma pouches or accessories to help you.
Essential supplies to pack:
- Stoma pouches
- Baseplates or flanges
- Barrier rings or seals
- Frames
- Adhesive remover wipes
- Skin barrier wipes
- Disposable bags
- Cleansing wipes
- Toilet paper or paper towel
Do I need a Doctors letter when Flying with a stoma?
While not always required, carrying a travel certificate or doctor’s letter is recommended.
The letter should explain:
- That you have a stoma
- Why you wear a stoma pouch
- Any medical supplies you need to carry onboard
This can help simplify airport security screening and reduce unnecessary questions. You can find a template for a travel certificate here as well.
What should I know about airport security screening?
Most airport security staff are familiar with medical appliances and stoma pouches. Sometimes security staff may ask to pat down the area; use a wand metal detector to check the area; or may ask to do a swab test by getting you to wipe your hands over the pouch and then swap your hands to detect other materials.
If you are concerned about body scanners
- Inform security staff before screening
- Request alternative screening procedures if needed
- Carry your travel certificate or medical documentation.
